Extreme rainfall events over Odisha state, India

Extreme rainfall events are a significant cause of loss life and livelihoods in Odisha. Objectives the present study to determine trend extreme during 1991-2014 compare between two periods before after 1991. Block level daily data were used identifying events, while district aggregation was analysing three categories, viz., heavy, very heavy extremely as per criteria given by India Meteorological Department (IMD). The state whole received one nine forty year. When percentage occurrence each category out total over different districts considered, maximum % occurred Kalahandi (5.8%), Bolangir (23.8%) Keonjhargarh (85.4%). Trend analysis showed that number increased few districts, namely, Bolangir, Nuapada, Keonjhargarh, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nawarangapur did not change other districts. In Puri district, frequency decreased. New all-time record high one-day observed twenty 1992 2014, surpassing earlier records, which could be attributed climate induced global warming. Interior south Odisha found hot spot for rainfalls.
